King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Day in Thailand

Today marks the 79th anniversary of the birth of King Bhumibol of Thailand. This King of Siam came to the throne in 1946. Though he is a constitutional monarch, he also has a sort of divine status that gives him much soft power in Thai politics. Especially in his later years, he has used this bully pulpit against corruption, despotism, etc.

From the Thai News Agency: ". . . the grounds in front of the Grand Palace became aglow with over a million candles marking His Majesty the King's 79th birthday at 7 pm."
